General Events Information
Cumbria branch is one of the most active (pardon the pun) branches in the
UK. 2009 proved to be a successful year for the various events run by the
branch building on the success of the previous few years.
Our annual events programme includes:
- An evening lecture programme which is free and open to the general public, the 2009/10 programme is now underway and details can be found here. Planning is also starting for our 2010/11 winter
lecture, so if you have any ideas of what you’d like to see on the
programme please send an e-mail to events@nicumbria.org.
- An annual dinner, details of which can be found here.
- A summer lecture programme details of which can be found here.
Recent successful events run by the branch include our highly successful “New Build in Cumbria?” lecture series which was attended by over 300 people during the course of the lecture series. This year we are planning a further series around geological disposal for which further information can be found on the summer lecture series page.
As a branch we also run a winter lecture programme which features a number
of lectures and visits on a range of different themes and topics related to
nuclear energy which is supported by the University of Central Lancashire
(UCLAN). The winter lecture programme typically includes one or more visits
to places of interests with an involvement with the nuclear industry, the
annual Young Person’s Speaking Competition and a range of lectures. For
example the 2009/10 lecture programme has included lectures on the
Environment Agency’s role in New Build and an American Perspective on
Handling High Level Radioactive Waste.
The Cumbria branch also run events such as our highly successful 2009 Nuclear
Institute launch event which gave local members an opportunity to meet,
socialise and network. We hope to follow this up in 2010 with a further
special event for members (details to follow).
We also run a successful bursary competition where we award
£2000 to a West Cumbrian A-Level student going on to University to study a
science or engineering related subject. For further details of how to enter
this series please contact
events@nicumbria.org.
We aim to ensure that all events information is placed on this website, but
if you want to ensure you get all the latest events info or would rather we
dropped you an email to keep you informed, please contact
events@nicumbria.org and we will add you to our mailing list.
